The formulas, exactly

Sawn timber is plain geometry: V = width × height × length per piece (150 × 50 mm × 3.2 m = 0.024 m³). For round logs, Huber's formula (the standard mid-diameter method in forest mensuration) is V = π/4 · d²mid · L, and Smalian's formula averages the two end cross-sections: V = π/8 · (d²1 + d²2) · L. Huber is what most European roundwood tables assume; Smalian slightly overestimates on tapered logs (both in Kershaw et al., Forest Mensuration). Cost = total volume × price; in budget mode the piece count is ⌊budget ÷ (per-piece volume × price)⌋. 1 m³ = 35.3147 ft³.

Sawn sizes are usually nominal — actual planed dimensions run a few mm smaller, which this page takes at face value. Round-log diameters are measured under bark; this computes solid geometric volume, not stacked (stere) volume.
